Continuing Coverage

September 2013

Starting in May 2013, I began following the relationship between the Baylor Alumni Association and Baylor University. The association is a separate entity from Baylor. The university had issued a notice of termination to the association for the use of the Baylor brand name. In response, there was a proposal for the association to dissolve and all alumni relations to be handle by the Baylor Alumni Network, which is completely under Baylor.

The story was written in three parts in order to fully explain the situation. There were numerous sides to the issue.

Breaking News Coverage

April 2013

I was at a party when I heard that a fertilizer plant in West, Texas had exploded.  The assistant city editor and the photo editor were already in West when I made it to the newsroom. We worked from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. on April 17, 2013 until we had reported the situation. I mainly coordinated coverage for that night, as well as through the next day. However, I, along with some of my colleagues, wrote stories from the newsroom in an effort to provide full coverage of the event.

Abbott: Area around explosion utterly destroyed

Perry declares explosion disaster, numbers still unconfirmed

Search and rescue ongoing after fatal plant explosion

Profile Piece
October 2012

Dr. Richard "Dick'" Couey is one of Baylor University's biggest fans. A tall, centries-old tree once stood in his yard. Once it became diseased, he knew he had to cut it down. In it's place, however, he imagined something to show his Baylor pride — a bear doing the signature "Baylor sic 'em."  Since it's carving, the bear has become something of a tourist spot.

Opinion Writing
Columns, Editorials

As a member of the Lariat staff, we are required to write monthly columns for the opinion section. In addtion, I am a member of the editorial board and have written several editorials for the paper. Below are a few examples of my opinion writing.

Viewpoint: Frankly, dear readers, we do give a ... for movie quotes

Viewpoint: Words are like my worn bike brakes: use with caution

Editorial: Teacher's past work needs to be forgiven

Editorial: US should do squat about obesity rates

Magazine Writing

Summer 2013

During the summer of 2013, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy. Part of our class requirements required us to write features and reflections on our time in Italy. Some of my writing was published in the Baylor in Florence magazine, which is designed, written and edited by students. My story is on page 10, but several of my pictures are used throughout the publication.
